The central idea of SZS is that it MAKES FUN of harem anime. It exaggerates the tropes of harem anime as to make them ironic. How this slips by people is beyond me.

The thing about SZS, though, is that it doesn't fully commit to that irony. Sure, it makes fun of fanservice, but it also frequently shamelessly indulges in that very same fanservice in ways that don't have an ironic context (see: character pin-up art).

I think I can still see that as ironic. It doesn't have to be about context, but intention. So even if it does indulge in fanservice, it still pokes fun at the people who find this stuff titillating- kinda like how Lucky Star is moe anime that makes fun of moe anime. It still has a lot of supposedly non-ironic moe elements to it, particularly in its merchandise, but I think the irony carries over to that, and I just have to chuckle when I see people taking the fanservice or moe elements of either show seriously. It's like a big inside joke, and if you're a loser fanboy you won't get it.

How is a single, official picture that is indulging in obvious fanservice and found in a contextless magazine spread ironic in its intention? You can't know the intention. Therefore, don't be surprised when it comes off as hypocritical. Using fanservice as a very obvious sales point, especially in a series that apparently makes fun of fanservice... yeah. Hypocritical.

Well, the people who find it titillating obviously miss the point of the show, so the joke's on them.

What fun is it if everyone gets the joke? I'm not discussing SZS or Lucky Star specifically, but the use of irony and self-awareness.

no. i enjoy subtlety. but subtle irony is an art and hard to pull off, and... tbqh, both szs and lucky star have almost none of that.

This is just my opinion and maybe we got different things from both shows, but I think you should rewatch them. ^^;;

I'm really glad to finally find someone who sees the point of Lucky Star, among all people going "LOL otaku lolibait".

God, I love Lucky Star. As soon as I got to the food talk in the first ep I understood the point of the show immediately. That was when I got that it denies the moe-moe stuff fans of this are looking for and that the show supposedly promised (LET'S HAVE YOU SIT THROUGH A 10-MINUTE CONVERSATION ABOUT CREMEPUFFS HAHAHAHAHA), and pokes fun of them.

I could just go on about it forever. It makes me soooo happy.

I'll just say that I finally watched the last two episodes yesterday, and now my love is complete.

Yes, SZS is ironic in its use of fanservice, but I don't think we should hold its merchandising against it. They're still in it for money. They still know the fastest way to get it is to provide said ironic fap material. If they put out prints with the girls in burkas, I don't think they'll go anyway. It would be awesome, but it wouldn't make them money.

Totally. They've poked fun at it. They're completely aware of what they're doing. So for the dumb people it might seem to negate the irony, but we know that, if anything, it makes it all the more ridiculous and to argue otherwise is to prove that you just don't get it.

Right. It doesn't really matter what context it's in, because the intent is already there. And the fact that they're throwing money at something that makes fun of them is even more hilarious.
