What's so weird about that? Good characters should always have layers--it's just good writing. If you've got a character who is exactly what they seem, then you've got a problem. True character versus simple characterization, as my prof used to say. Gwen intially seems like the nice, every-girl who adds humanity to the group, so you think "Ah, nice person." And then her character gets revealed, and she's a bit manipulative, and secretive, and kind of scary. Her girl-parts have nothing to do with it (and I can see that sort of hate getting a knee-jerk reaction. Actually, nothing lols me more in Torchwood fandom than the shipwars regarding Jack. I haven't seen past "To the Last Man" yet, but it would crack me up like made if Ianto and Gwen got together. And then Jack would, y'know, probably show up and...well, do what Jack does. But then there's still the matter of poor, long-suffering Rhys).

I don't see why seeing characters in layers=issues.
