It depends on what you want to sing. And if it's specific roles in musical theatre, I agree (though you could probably do chorus).

I think, for people who can sing, it's sort of hard to imagine you can't. I'm not classically trained, but singing comes naturally to me, and it took me ears to figure out it isn't like that for everyone. Swimming did too (and I am to this day baffled some people can't).

Bu then, there's stuff I can't do, that other people find easy. I think people just have pretty self-centered world views in this.

I think, for people who can sing, it's sort of hard to imagine you can't. Not only that but they often don't seem to realize how different it is from being able to draw or dance or whatever. You either have it or you don't and people who were born with nice pipes can't understand how lucky they are sometimes, or imagine being so ugly-sounding that even singing when you're by yourself is just depressing.
