Favorite and least favorite accents

(Anonymous) 2016-07-02 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
What accents sound best to you, and which ones the most off-putting?

(For any language).

I really love Scottish accents speaking English, and also Russian and Indian.

I'm personally not a fan of Chinese or German accents speaking English.

(I don't speak any languages other than English well enough to have accent preferences unfortunately.)

I can't think of an accent I don't like. None are really off-putting. Of ESL speakers, Russians' accents are probably my least favorite. Even the more maligned accents like German, Indian, and Asian accents are pleasing to my ear in English.

For a favorite, I'd say Bernie's, but I might just being influenced by his general extreme sexiness. NE accents and Appalachian accents are up in my faves for American accents. Overall for native English dialects Australian is the winner imho though.

Bernie's accent isn't new england, it's brooklyn that's partly drifted/faded over time. That's where he grew up. Didn't come to Vermont until later.

Oh I meant North-East by NE, not New England. But New England ones specifically are quite nice too. Listening to older people from Maine talk is especially fun.

I like most European accents, especially British ones. Also Australian and New Zealand accents. Not a fan of Southern US accents. Sometimes German ones can be harsh for me.

the most offputting for me? Whatever they're trying to sell as Remy LeBeau's Cajun accent, especially when he goes all third person. Reading it is one thing but his voice from the 90s cartoon, ugh. Do not want.

lol

this is the second time I hear about this shitty attempt at Cajun, do you have a good example of what it should sound like (aside form old folks on youtube)? I'm curious as to what it should sound like. Like...Little Chernier (movie from 2006/7?)?

Indian accents fall under both of these for me. For some inexplicable reason, when I am in a good mood Indian accents sound freakin' adorable to me, but when I'm in a bad mood they are annoying af. I have no idea why. This is not the case for any other accent---my reaction to other ones don't depend on my mood.

Faves:

British, all the regional flavors of it.
Chicago accents.
Boston accents.
Upper Midwest accent, i.e. the Fargo accent because it's hilarious.
German.

Off putting:

Most southern accents except Cajun.

I watch a lot of ASMR, so I hear a lot of different accents, and I find that I really like Russian, English, and Dutch accents.

I don't like "fake" accents in something that's supposed to be serious. Like the "French" guy who obviously sounds like an American guy putting on a really bad, stereotypical French accent. It doesn't bother me in cartoons or comedic situations though for some reason.

I actually really like midwest or southern American accents (probably due to my love of country music). Australian accents squick me because I am Australian and I get weird secondhand embarrassment when I hear what we really sound like.

You mean cheek-pinchingly adorable?

I like most accents, though one of my favorites is Nigerian.

The one I hate, though, is Filipino. It just sounds so whiny to me. I don't know why.
