This is one of those things where I wonder how old the writer of the fic is? Nobody under a certain age uses it, but "do the right thing" was just an accepted colloquialism for abortion because it was such a forbidden topic. Yes, it's ugly, but this may be one of those times to consider the source.

I misread the secret first too -- "doing the right thing" wasn't referring to the abortion, it referred to Dean giving the woman money.

Which could be skeevy in the wrong context. ("Uh-oh, it would be bad for me if you have that baby, so here's some hush money, go take care of it and don't tell anyone.") But if your pregnant partner has said that's what she wants, then paying your share is the responsible thing.

Huh, I always thought "do the right thing" in this context meant shotgun wedding. I guess I was a little naive about that.

No, that's what it meant where I come from, too. You still hear people saying "they had to get married" around here, meaning the guy is "doing the right thing".
