For those that are clueless about American culture after 2000 (I graduated from college in 2000 and pretty much am awed at 'omg kids are now doing what?'), what did the Black Eyed Peas do that was so wrong?

They made a lot of really, really bad songs that were insanely popular and basically omnipresent, and also tried to seem more important than they were. Completely awful ear-worms.

They made Where Is The Love, Let's Get It Started, Don't Phunk With My Heart, My Humps, Boom Boom Pow, I Gotta Feeling, Hey Mama... I mean, the 2000s were a pretty bad time in American culture and politics and the Black Eyed Peas epitomized a lot of that stuff.

Agreed. They set into motion the "club party" songs that ruled the airwaves for years. Music in the mainstream became extremely shallow and there was obvious very little effort put into the songs.

I mean, I quite like some club party-type songs, but their efforts were mostly really bad and repetitive and dull and almost cynical.

ugh, "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling" - I'm at a point where those two songs make me do a full body cringe. Nothing like walking back into Electronics and having every TV in that department playing those two songs.
