Why Witches Are Cool

(Anonymous) 2016-07-02 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
1) They're smart and know lots of crazy shit
2) Not only are they smart, they know lots of secret and esoteric stuff and have occult powers
3) There's a strong overlap in their magical powers with domesticity and knowledge of nature and cooking and all kinds of other humdrum normal things, which makes their magic more interesting and comprehensible
4) They're powerful and can cast spells and make potions. These are intrinsically cool things to be able to do.
5) They're marginal figures - outcast, feared and suspected - which makes them much more interesting and relatable especially in combination with their powers
6) They generally have a really cool, earthy aesthetic
7) They're often viewed as agents of fate and natural processes which is really interesting
8) They're usually given a lot of agency in narratives, which is rad

9) They are rarely sexualised.

But 10) when they're sexualized it's usually with a sense of power and, again, real agency

Witches are cool... because they forgot to bring their shawl with them. I told my mother in law that it was a cold night out, but would she listen. Well now she is cool and growing colder and I'll probably have to give her my jacket.

This just reminded me that one of my favourite light fantasy books is "Song of Sorcery" by Elizabeth Scarborough. The heroine is a hearthwitch, mostly good at domestic magic rather than the more powerful magics of the rest of her family, but it turns out that domestic magic has A LOT of uses on a quest, and there's a scene where she spins a dragon like a top with a whirlwind by ordering her magic to make her a very large souffle right under its tail.
