Has the show outpaced the books then?

Like 90% of season 6 is not in the books.

That's awesome, I love divergent storylines. One reason I never got into the show much was that it wasn't much fun when I already knew what was gonna happen.

Based on how the story feels, we'll get one more season before the storyline finishes (unless they split it into two seasons, which wouldn't surprise me). We're way ahead of the books, new ground, and I'm loving it. "Unspoiled" GoT is quite fun!

I think the directors have come out and said that they are doing two sort of half-seasons with 7 eps in one and 8 in the other to finish out the story. GRRM already told them a bunch about the end and what happens to who, but they're going to invent a lot of the storyline themselves because the show is basically (and always has been) sort of an AU of the books.
