Because the sooner you realize that the things you can't help thinking about yourself at three in the morning are all 100% true, the sooner you will realize that that's an incredibly awful way to live, and perhaps you can begin a painful process of personal growth.

Just imagine: in a few years, you'll be lying awake and you'll remember, with squirming, self-loathing embarrassment, the asinine shit you used to post about refugees. And you'll think "God, I'm a worthless person. I bring nothing to human existence but ugliness, hatred, and stupidity." BUT, in this imaginary future, you'll be able to think "Wait, no, hang on. Yes, I used to be a worthless person. But I made the effort to change. I learned a lot, I confronted some nasty truths about myself, and I have made amends where I can. I'm a flawed person, sure, everyone is, but at least nowadays I'm doing my best to be a better one."

In that future, you can go back to sleep with a small, wry smile on your face, because you know that the things you can't help thinking about yourself at three in the morning are not, in fact, 100% true.

But here, now, today, they are. And that fact does and should hurt.
