OP of the very first secret in the chain here. I'm sorry the reaction to my secret drove you crazy, mods. I just wanted to clear up some things.

-On the subject of foreigners: If it's not licensed in your country, you should consider it not licensed. I don't see anything wrong with you downloading something like that.
-On the subject of fansubs: They're not evil. I've seen plenty, both VHS and torrent. But I buy what I watch, and so should you.
-On the subject of being poor: I don't exactly approve of this excuse, even though I know its validity. Maybe you should restrain yourself to unlicensed series? This is a more difficult one to approach than the others, I'll give you that. I once had a friend that gave this excuse, and I tried to discourage her from downloading licensed series and gave boxsets as gifts, but it wasn't good enough discouragement, so maybe it's just not solvable.

If your nationality and financial circumstances make it possible for you to go down to the store and buy whatever you want, please do so.

What if it's really, really bad? I'm really grateful I could watch Chobits online, so I'll never have to waste money on something I dislike so much.

Generally, that's how I see downloading - as a way to sample things so I know which ones I want to buy.

I also think that downloading the really popular ones (like Naruto, Bleach, and the like), is a lot less harmful since they're made by large companies (who make extreme amounts of money mostly from merchandise) that are less hurt by downloading.

Actually, even the popular stuff doesn't make as much money as TV boxsets (no wonder they're cheaper). We're a niche market. It just might not seem that way because some of us, and I include myself in this, prefer the less popular series and separate ourselves from the culture around the more popular ones.

Nothing makes as much money as television box sets. It's not exactly the same market, is it?

I don't pick series because of their popularity, or lack thereof, and I hope I have a balanced view of the fandom, as far as it is possible. I do know that ever since anime became easily accessible online, the industry has exploded. Sure, it would be even bigger if all anime fans bought everything they watched, but that's just not possible, for several reasons.

As long as people buy what they can and what they like, I think it's good enough.

Because some people don't, and announce their pirate status proudly. Some people are jerks. It doesn't mean I think everyone is.

I do try to stay away from more popular series (or if I catch wind that it's being liscensed, I try to download it as fast as possible)! The only liscensed stuff I have downloaded is stuff that is long gone--stuff you can't even FIND anymore. I try to stick to the stuff that's on Animesuki and the like..

I really would like to be able to purchase the boxsets, but I know I can't. They're way too expensive--I have so little money as it is, I really can't be spending it on stuff that isn't essential..

But I DO buy manga--I don't download it unless it hasn't been liscensed, or I'm curious to see what something is about before I dive in and buy it. Even if I have read scans of it, I'll still most likely buy it. I also try to avoid knock-offs when it comes to merchandise.. That way they're at least getting SOME of my money when I do have it.

I do try to stay away from liscensed series.. I'm not totally a bad person. It just hurts when people assume I'm terrible because I'm poor. I'm not.

I don't think anyone thinks you're terrible because you're poor. It's just a lot of us folks get tired of the asshats who never spend a dime on the industry and claim their pirate status proudly and feel that they're entitled to steal from the original creators without so much as a warning.

Trust me, I understand being poor--at least you're trying to support the industry where you can. :)
