Thank you.

Sorry, I just had to comment on the father figure thing. That drives me up a wall, because I seriously see not even a hint of that between them, at all. Even if opinions about their 'relationship' can possibly be debatable, and I like to listen to all sides and opinions on what people might think- I just can not agree with the father-figure one.

Exactly. There's not a hint anywhere of that sort of dynamic. I think people are fooled by the age difference and the fact that Ed is not fully grown when he joins the army. Nevermind that he does his growing-up on the road, mostly, and with little influence from Roy.

(I'd rather put Izumi as their "father figure", actually.)

I will, personally accept the suggestion of Hughes as father figure, as I've had several people argue that point to me in varying degrees and if I had to pick someone from the military there really is no one else to fit the bill.

Izumi is definitely an interesting take on that, and I can actually see it, myself.

I just don't think Ed and Al are close enough to anyone in the military for one of them to fill that role. It's only in the series itself that they get to know Hughes (and the others) better, and by that time they're alreay grown, more or less (they aren't exactly like other kids their age). I do think that Hughes interacts with them in a fatherly way, though.

I just had the thought recently, but I think she really does fill the criteria of what one usually thinks of as the father fugure. She provides guidance and a set of values, she is a strong role model and represents safety and protection, and she loves them as if they were her own children.
