Fandoms were not less weird back in the day. It's just easier for trends to cross over in this super connected world. And more diversity in a singular fandom is always a good thing. Regardless of what people may think, there isn't a huge significant amount of [kink/trope I find weird] infecting your fandom. There is a tiny amount that you see all the time because you hate it.

"daddy" is distinct from (although not unrelated to) age strictly speaking

(Anonymous) 2016-07-05 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've seen it doesn't necessarily mean an attractive older man, I've seen it for characters that are just 2-3 years older and act more responsible than the rest.

I think the "Hot Dad" thing for Shiro is a carryover from his incarnation as Sven, who was a daddy (if you watched Voltron Force, the one with Allura's randomly appearing niece)

I've only watched the first episode but Shiro seemed older than everyone else to me. Granted, that could have just been because he's bigger than everyone else (which is great since I have a definite size kink).

Same here. I think it's the size (taller, more developed muscles), his experience (especially in comparison to the other team members), and that little bit of white hair with the black is reminiscent of salt-and-pepper, which makes me think older.

He does act more mature than the others most of the time, and does take on a dad/older brother kind of role to the rest of the paladins.

I have a hard believing he's the same age as the others, I see him as somewhere in his early to mid 20s.

Ooo, that character is attractive. Fun hair! (The character design is reminiscent of Generator Rex...is it by the same people, or am I seeing things that aren't there?)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-05 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually thought the fanart I saw of him was supposed to be Jason Todd for a quite a while. He also has a white hair patch with the same build.

It's actually animated by the same studio who did both Avatar series!

I can't wait for this flavor of the month series to fuck off and die.

I have nothing to add, except that pic if the Enterprise crew from "I, Mudd" together with the phrase "Happy Space Family" really makes me smile! I realize they were dancing around like dorks just to fool the androids, but it's fun to imagine they were just having a good time goofing off.

My only grievance with the current Tumblr format for fandoms things is I miss the old Tumblr search engine where it showed all the popular posts. The current one only shows recent popular posts so if I get into a fandom late, I end up missing out on seeing fanart that were uploaded awhile ago. :(

I'm also not a fan of the space family trend in Voltron either, but that's because I generally don't like having the mom/dad/family trope in anything I ship or characters I like. Even though I don't like it, it doesn't particularly bother me if that makes sense. I get that there are people who like it so I would scroll through it and find stuff I like. Although I think some of it may be unintentional daddy kink, because I've seen artist draw Shiro as the family dad but also ship him with Keith or Lance. I think it's best you have daddy kink blacklisted OP, most people tag daddy kink, if they were going for that angle, although there are probably people who don't or forget to tag it, so I'm not sure about that.

It didn't bother me before because I thought people took it as a joke, but now, seeing it used to deter other shippers from shipping Shiro/anyone who isn't their designated pairing rubs me the wrong way.

Also I love those little moments where he acts like a teenager.
