It amuses but puzzles me that in AU versions of a character, they have glasses to show how downtrodden they are now. Or, conversely, if a character becomes badass, they lose the glasses.

Like, I didn't know being badass/miserable controlled your vision...

(Yes, I understand it's an artistic choice.)

It's the cultural association of glasses with being a loser. I'm not sure how that started since it doesn't actually make a ton of sense rationally.

nerds are losers => nerds read books => reading a lot strains your eyes / generally weak so vision is weak too => glasses are for nerds => glasses are for losers.
idk something like that? Blame the devaluing of education.

I look at it this way:

If you're downtrodden, do you want to fuck with putting things in your eyes, maybe losing them, and needing eye drops? Or do you just want to put the things on your face that let you see?

If you're a fighter person: Do you want to worry about getting hit and having your glasses slam into your face, probably injuring you (even if not severely), maybe falling off your face or breaking entirely and then not being able to see? Sure, contacts are still a risk, but it would seem they are less of a risk.

I think this is used to sell contacts.
