Annoyances about Purists

(Anonymous) 2016-07-06 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
For people to rants about those annoying people in fandom who piss on everyone's parade by acting like they're the fandom police.

(specific examples please. Not just"tumblr")

Basically all the "Cursed Child sounds like bad fanfic!" whinging.

To be fair though, it does sound like badfic. The play could be great, of course, but it does sound all kinds of horrible, if you only read the summary.

I think what bugs me is when some purists tell everyone they have to agree with them. Like, tell movie-only LOTR and HObbit fans they shouldn't write what they want to write and are not true fans. Or fans who hate on Star Wars Prequel fans.

Basically, nothing wrong with being a purist. But don't insist everyone has to be.

I get annoyed by people who act like literally everyone hates the Star Wars prequels and that they are universally considered failures at every level of movie-making.

I agree. I love all 7 of the Star Wars movies plus the two Clone Wars shows and Rebels and a good chunk of the EU. I'm not going to apologize for that. I love Star Wars. I love the universe. And the prequels are fun. I don't love them quite as much as the OT, but I do love them.

Okay, but what about the Ewoks cartoon?

Never seen it. I have seen parts of the Holiday Special, though, and I do draw my line at that. I do not like that.

different anon:

does anyone like the Holiday Special?

eh, for me, the Ewoks cartoon wasn't as bad as the Ewoks movies (ugh..) and the Droids cartoon (the one made at the same time as the Ewoks cartoon) [or, let's see how many owners R2D2 and C3PO can get...]

This!

The prequels aren't the best movies, but they aren't the worst movies either.

Yes. I hate that people act like they were some trauma that they lived through.

Re: Annoyances about Purists

(Anonymous) 2016-07-06 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who is usually a purist, I hate when purists say "this didn't happen."

Nooooo, it DID happen. It didn't happen in the ORIGINAL material, no, but it happened in the adaptation's version. You'd think people acquainted with fanfic could wrap their head around the concept of alternate universes.

Sub purists in anime fandom. And translation purists who want the subs to be completely literal yet also convey every meaning and nuance of the original, even though those two things are usually impossible to do at the same time.

Comic book purists for superhero movies. 'It happened this way in the comics, so it has to happen in the movies!' uh no that's actually a terrible reason to do something because it might not even work in the context of the movie universe.

And some of the book purists for TMI get really annoying over Shadowhunters, yes Alec doesn't have blue eyes in the show but does that really matter? The ones that complain about Luke being black are the worst though and I skirt well away from those assholes.

I hate when people complain about the minor physical feature differences. "Their hair isn't blonde enough!" "They're too short. _____ is supposed to be 5'9 and they are only 5'7!"

It's dumb, and frankly so long as the actor in question does a good job I don't care if they have the wrong colour hair or eyes, and it really doesn't matter anyway.

The one that gets me most is people complaining about dark eyebrows on blondes in adaptions. Generally the original material doesn't even mention eyebrow color, and there are plenty of natural blondes with dark eyebrows.

Not to mention it's a practical thing - they show up a lot better, which is kinda important for facial expressions.

This is particularly stupid as there are so many different universes/alternate realities/time travel shenanigans etc. in the comic-verse, how hard can it be to wrap your head around it that maybe, the movie adaptions are just another alternate universe?

"You must be THIS traumatized/victimized to ship this. And you must relive your trauma by reporting to us about it, so we can judge how traumatized you are. If not you're SCUM and need to die"

And the worst part is that these fucks think they're doing victims a favor. Instead of some self righteous wankfest

How many victims do you think have been re-victimized and slandered because of their ships because they didn't want to tell some entitled stranger about the worst experience of their life?

Some fan purists may be annoying
but these guys do the most damage.

Re: Annoyances about Purists

(Anonymous) 2016-07-06 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
That's...that's not what purism means. That's ship policing, a whole separate thing. Purism is about being overly inflexible about changes adaptations make to the source material.

Thief fandom and the "immersive sim" fandom in general.

It just baffles me how one of the most forward-thinking companies to have ever existed (Looking Glass Studios) that built itself on thinking outside the box and pushing the boundaries of game design, is now having its "legacy" maintained by some of the most conservative, hidebound, dogmatic and above all frighteningly possessive gamers to have ever existed.

Of all the annoying Hannibal purists, this one was the greatest:
http://neil-gaiman.tumblr.com/post/124125564991/are-you-aware-bryan-fuller-wants-to-hire-the

My favorite part of it, aside from his response, is her naming herself after a character and ship that wouldn't exist without Fuller's evil butchery. The purists are usually much more interested in Hannibal/Clarice, actual book canon.
