Unfortunately the insufferable precocious brat seems to be one of the few ways Hollywood knows how to write kids.

Actually, it seems like a lot of the time they only create smug, insufferable brats, skipping even the precocious part. I mean, Sara Crewe in the book was both smart and kind. In the Cuaron movie version she's just snarky and kind of insufferable. The only evidence of her smarts is the one scene of her speaking French.
