DUDE HOLY SHIT

Do not let anything you have with you touch your house when you get home until it's been sanitized. Put clothes in dryer on high heat. Backpacks etc. can go in the oven. You can wipe stuff down with rubbing alcohol but be very careful about this (maybe do it outside?) since the fumes are super flammable (can spontaneously ignite near a heat source like an oven...this has happened, though not to me).

I'm not kidding, not even a little bit. I am currently fighting bed bugs and fighting my landlords to actually deal with them or let me move out. It's a nightmare. You do NOT want these fuckers to take up residence. It's worth taking a couple hours to make sure they don't. Their eggs are tiny, sticky, and hard to see, and the only thing that kills them is heat or alcohol (the eggs are resistant to basically all pesticides and the nymphs and adults are resistant to most of them).

ETA and if you can please get some plastic bags to seal your stuff in so if you have any hitchhikers they don't spread to another host. If you're staying in houses maybe you could sanitize all your stuff with the next host?

Sorry if I sound paranoid but paranoid > bed bugs. They are very expensive ans time-consuming to get rid of and they also shit blood all over the sheets and walls.

HOLY SHIT ICK AUGH GROSS UGH EW EW EW! ... okay, so I've been paranoid about possibly bringing these suckers home from work or public transit, but now I'm extra paranoid. On the bright side, this pretty much confirms that I've never actually had them in my house; I'm a slob, but I would've noticed something that disgusting. I have sticky fleas (or rather, my cat and chickens do, they don't seem to like people much) and dealing with them has been gross (and painful for my critters) enough.

You would definitely notice it if you have light-enough colored sheets. Fecals spots are one of the telltale signs of an infestation.

Honestly, while you can get bed bugs from anywhere, the chances of bringing them home are still not high if you aren't in a place you know to be infested. I'd just be careful about keeping your bag on your person on the train/bus (like on your lap or holding it) and maybe (? I don't know much about transit infestations) avoid sitting down unless you have to or have a very long ride.

Where do you work? While they can infest any place, they're much more likely to be in certain settings than others. I think I may have gotten them from work but I work in a hospital and there was a report of an infestation in a unit that sometimes delivers specimens to my unit a few months ago (presumably it's been cleared now). Might have also gotten them from a neighbor. They're attracted to the carbon dioxide you exhale so it's completely feasible that if a neighbor had a gravid female hitchhike home from a hotel or something and put their bag down by the outlet on the other side of the wall from my bed that the bug would have crawled through the wall to me rather than infest the neighbor.

I'd say honestly the best thing you can do is just make sure you know what the signs of infestation are (fecal spots, bites, and what the bugs themselves look like) and if you ever suspect you are infested get inspected and treated IMMEDIATELY by a reputable exterminator. If you haven't seen bugs in the places you frequent, try not to waste energy on worrying about them. Just don't put your luggage on the floor when you travel/inspect hotel rooms before you sleep, and if you ever do stay in a place that's infested* (like Bigpaw did) that's when you need to start sanitizing stuff. I only suggested all that to her because she knows she was exposed to them.

*and if you're in a hotel and you realize your room is infested ask to change rooms, you don't need to sleep with them
