I admit that I no longer do it. I used to - I used to work really hard on fanfiction, and I still have a few fics where I experiment with new stuff and put a lot of effort into it. But overall, since I can get away with 85%, and so many well-loved fics are just terrible, I just don't see the point sometimes.
It's not like my 85% is bad. It's just not nearly as rigorous as I'd put into something else. Fewer drafts, less rereads, etc. And sometimes there are plot issues that I just let slide because eh, it's good enough.

85% is more than generous IMO for free entertainment.

I do think that my 85% is decent. It's just that after that it starts becoming a real effort, and when I write fic I'd rather just have fun. Now that I've passed the threshold where my 85% feels good enough, that is. A few years ago I was still working hard.
...also tbh, it's harder to find betas that actually push me.
