You can't separate out vengeance-based judgments like "rapists aren't people" from bigotry-based judgments like "women aren't people" or "Jews aren't people." It's not about deserving or not deserving suffering; it's about the mindset required to frame someone as not being a person. Person A says women aren't people and rapes them; you say Person A isn't a person and let him be raped, and maybe person C says you're not a person for that.

Except there is a clear line "Person A ... rapes" "I let Person A be raped"

I'm a Utilitarian, so I'm all about pushing the fat man off the bridge: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolley_problem#related_problems

I don't distinguish not pulling the lever and letting five people die from pulling a lever that kills five people, so I don't distinguish raping someone from letting someone be raped. Inaction is just as much of a choice as directly acting. (In practice, that means everyone's guilty of something, but I think morality should establish an ideal, even if no human being can perfectly match it in every circumstance. It's up to us to negotiate our imperfections and be the best we reasonably can be.)

No, I get that, I just don't have any idea what that has to do with this thread

I read anon's point as being about their ability to make a bright-line delineation between people who do and do not "deserve" rape based on their actions, and disagreeing with the idea that there's a broader ethical principle here. It doesn't have anything to do with the idea of direct versus indirect responsibility. At least as I read it.

And I mean for the record I don't agree with anon, I was just really confused.

Honestly, I'm kind of confused, too.
