It's not a definite sign, but the amount of money they spend on fandom. How often they buy merchandise and what kind, how often they go to cons (and other fandom events) and how far they're able/willing to go for them. It won't make things completely clear, because it could be a teenager who doesn't need to buy anything else or it could be someone who just doesn't have any other hobbies and saves every penny for fannish stuff. But even then I feel like you'd at least be able to guess whether they're barely getting by or not.

I mean, even though I've been unemployed for a while I'd still say I'm doing ok. I have/had savings. But fandom stuff has definitely become an indulgence I feel guilty about for ages when I've given in.
