Luckily at parties they tend to behave themselves because lots of other people are there. They do say some asshole (though not bigoted at least) things but I just ignore them. There was one time I was at dinner with my parents and Debbie, though, where she started saying some homophobic things and I called her on it.

Ignoring is probably the way to go in general. Don't blame you for calling out Debbie. I hope it didn't escalate too much. That sort of thing can backfire. But I probably would also have said something.
