Re: My parents have racist friends and it really bothers me
(Anonymous) 2016-07-08 03:43 am (UTC)(link)Thank you. My dad's somewhat better than my mom as well, but he's afraid of her, so even if he agrees with me, he'll keep his mouth shut and then tell me later "you were right, but I didn't want to piss your mother off by disagreeing with her". It's...frustrating.
That intolerance thing is such bullshit like you said. Because where does it stop? Is it wrong to be "intolerant" of child molesters? Rapists? Spouse abusers? Murderers? Somewhere you have to draw the line between what behavior is and is not acceptable.
The "just because it's reality doesn't make it true" comment from your dad is so familiar. My mom has said incredibly similar things before, with almost that exact wording.
as soon as you start poking holes in her arguments, or cognitive dissonance sets in, she decides she hates talking politics and throws you out.
My mom does that same exact thing, too.
I mean, my parents are relatively open-minded when compared to everyone else around here, but that doesn't mean that they (mostly my mom) don't still say some really ignorant shit sometimes.
