Re: ok let's try a general confession thread.

When I was growing up, we had a dog. I was seriously depressed and also bullied in school. My parents ignored me except when they wanted to yell. I was miserable.

And I took it out on the dog. I'd yell at him, and sometimes I hit him. I still feel so much guilt about this even today. I can't forgive myself for hurting an innocent animal. I'm a horrible person, and I know it.

Maybe you could look into volunteering at an animal shelter, or donating to one if you don't feel comfortable being around animals. It might help your conscience.

You were a kid. Now you're an adult so you know what you did was wrong because you have developed more reasoning, coping, and empathy skills. When you were a kid, your parents and community should have been guiding you to do right and correcting your bad behaviors. They failed you. You were a victim and the dog was another victim as a result of your parents' actions.

Even if you weren't a kid, you don't have to be defined by your past actions. Beating yourself up over the past accomplishes nothing. WE are all flawed beings and all we can do is try to be better in the present and future. Maybe you should make amends for it. Say a prayer for the dog, or donate some money to an anti animal cruelty organization, or give pet food to a food shelter.

You're not a horrible person, anon.

I'm so sorry. I hope you can heal from this and find peace. As long as you know what you did was wrong and don't repeat it, I think you will eventually be okay and be able to move on. Horrible people don't reflect on their actions, much less assess the damage they did or desire to make up for what they did. So I don't think you're a horrible person. You were a kid then. Now you know better.

your guilt does not help that dog, you're beating yourself up about it does not change what happened. guilt is oftentimes a self-soother, you believe if you punish yourself enough you'll eventually feel better, but it does not in any way make anything better for the dog or change the result. guilt is not a productive emotion. rather than sitting around and feeling guilty, volunteer, donate, or otherwise contribute positively to the well-being of another animal, eventually the guilt will fade. realize your guilt does not help anything, feeling really really guilty and hating yourself doesn't make you a better person, doing things differently does.
