I feel like it'd also teach you what works well for dealing with stuff too? (Not just in the context of the story.)
And I'm sure your fics are the better for the research, instead of being laden with assumptions (which even people whose backgrounds were mostly functional would fall prey to).

You may be "fucked up" (by your current standards), but you're not irredeemable. The fact that you're willing to look this stuff up at all, that says it pretty clearly imo.
