That's awful. Can you get (monetary) compensation from the jeweler for the replacement?

I don't know. I have no idea. :( The shop staff took the ring back to compare it to the photos of the original. It depends on what happens and how bastardly they decide to be I guess. I'm not happy that they still have the ring, and I really wish we'd had it photographed separately by another company for independent verification.

I reckon you should be able to get some compensation. Did they hand you a contract or have a contract of sorts on their websites?

You absolutely should ask for compensation, anon, and take it up the chain if they have to. Their negligence has cost you not only a huge amount in monetary value but it's an heirloom with (presumably) emotional/sentimental value too.
