Does anyone ever feel that they've bitten of more than they can chew, fanfic-wise? I idly posted a ficlet, which got a lot of nice comments, so I posted a second part, and now somehow I seem to have created expectations that my story will be a long, chaptered fic. I don't know if I have the smarts to deliver, and I'm basically panicking.

Been there, done that.

One thing to remember is that you don't have to write the big fic that people expect/want. You're completely free to say "I'm glad you liked it, but it's just a two-parter."

If you do decide to go for it, you might want to consider outlining. Not necessarily every plot-point, but where, in general, you want the story to go.

ayrt

Thank you for your advice! Yeah, I'm doing the outline thing, and my brain is still throwing ideas at me so that's something at least. I've just never written more than 2-3k ficlets before, so it's incredibly intimidating.

I'm not going to post another chapter until I've got the story a bit more sorted. Also, most of the comments are in the vein of "More please!" which just makes me more nervous!

I know the feeling, but remember that other peoples' expectations are not your problem. You don't have to oblige them, no matter how many begging/entitled reviews you get, or how many people asking you about it. Do what is fun and feels right to you, and reasonable readers will understand. There'll always be unreasonable readers, of course, but hey, fuck 'em.

When I leave comments saying "I'd really love to see where this fic goes" and the like. I don't expect an author to write what they don't want to or feel is done. I'm simply trying to offer encouragement and positivity to the person who does have ideas but maybe lacks confidence or who wants to see people are responding positively before they continue. Just so you know where maybe some of the comments are coming from.
