05. What's your source on the claim that the anime industry needs foreign money to support itself? I'm not saying you're wrong or lying, just that I've never heard that before and I'd be interested in seeing where it comes from.

35. The only good thing to come out of it is cat macros

WRONG.

57. The manga went through a massive streak of shit. It's starting to recover (the plot's moving for the first time in like a YEAR) but it's still got a ways to go.

Really, it needs to get back to the lulz that it had near the beginning. It's all been srs business for EVER.

Just chiming in, I work with a few rather large conventions and know a couple of the people in charge of guest relations--and yes, it is true that a lot of the Japanese companies rely heavily on foreign money to survive. I believe Shinichi Watanabe brought that up while he was here last for Oni-con. Apparently quite a few companies are dying due to the lack of sales in either Japan or here--well, the companies that aren't making Bleach, Deathnote, or Naruto, etc.

Granted, a good deal of it is poor marketing, what with selling the licenses to companies that don't even have an easily accessible channel to broadcast the shows on--but all the same, a lot of good companies that put out good anime are going under because people aren't buying the releases over in America. Srsly, a lot of anime series (the lesser known ones that aren't the series I listed above) are extremely fortunate if they can sell five hundred copies in this country. A large part of this is due to people downloading fansubs in favor of buying the official releases, which is why the industry as a whole is all over fansub groups. =\

I buy the DVD releases of whatever I can, but licensing companies frequently fuck that up by waiting an eternity to release the DVDs. By the time they come out, I've lost interest, having watched the series like two years ago. I mean, I get that it takes time to do their thing, but christ, this is not a good business model.

(And there's the fact that the DVDs are about twice as expensive as their western counterparts. Thirty-some bucks for four episodes of FMA no thank you)

I do understand that--things have been changing for the better though. In fact, I think FUNi and Viz are just releasing straight box sets from the get-go.

(Ack, I know. Suncoast started that bullshit because they wanted profit--then people got mad, drove further into downloading, and now anime is/was forced into costing that much because they were losing so much money otherwise. It's no wonder Suncoast tanked over here X_X)

I know that's how Funimation is releasing One Piece! This makes me happy in my pants and in other, deeper places. Guess where I'm going to be, wallet in hand, come May 24th?

And they're putting a wait time of only 6-8 weeks between sets. God, I love what Funimation is doing with One Piece.

Yes, FUNi's doing a great job with listening to their customers--so it gives me hope that others will notice and start putting money back into the industry again instead of just leaving it up to folks like you and me.
