5. So now you're psychic and KNOW how "MOST FANS" spend their money. Riiiight.

35. I sympathize.

57. Who wants to bet this secret was made before chapter -108 came out?

It's not like it's a huge secret that a good chunk of people get their anime through downloads.

Re: 5

But this person is claiming that "most fans" don't buy DVDs. As this topic has circled all too frequently already, many have said they both download AND buy DVDs. Claiming "most fans" do not is something the poster can not prove, because it would require that the poster know "most fans".

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-04-01 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I got the impression they weren't talking about "Have never ever bought a DVD in their life" so much as don't buy the DVD for everything they watch and enjoy.

I have a feeling most people have bought significantly less DVDs then anime they fangirl/boy over. Ask Geneon. True they can't say "most fans" but it's a significant enough amount of fans that I don't think it's a unfair generalization.

Re: 5

[personal profile] cyanglow 2008-04-01 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that they're probably talking about what people watch and enjoy. And I do think it is an unfair generalization. It all is based on the fans they know. Whereas I can say that among all the anime fans I know, most of them DO purchase the DVDs. Many of said fans even sell them at their online stores. So the original poster knows different fans than I do. Who is to say what the real average is?

Re: 5

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-04-01 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It makes me really happy you know people like that because I think I know maybe.....2 people who I can say honestly buy all their anime (Not downloads or bootlegs.)

I work at cons and use to run a pretty popular anime club. I really do think you're groups in the minority, at least in the southwest US area, but it makes me really, really happy that they are there. But with companies going under because of this, and people high up who's job it is to know the average making statement, even if it's not the majority, it's a big enough movement that it's an issue.

Re: 5

[personal profile] cyanglow 2008-04-01 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I've worked at cons too, and yeah "my group" (if you can call it that) is mostly centered in Yaoi, so we're already aware of being a minority. :) I don't know if any of this is regional at all though, because my friends are spread out all over the globe. (And they/I don't just buy the specific genre; we buy anything we intend on watching over and over and over, including American tv series.)

As far as companies go, I've got no talent for statistics, so I wish them luck. I do think if they take into consideration what the downloaders are saying instead of preaching down at them and pissing them off, they could stand a better chance at making it.

Re: 5

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think some have started to. Or, at least I've noticed that SOME companies are starting to (thinner boxes, extras that are wanted, etc). I don't think it's 100% fan faults, but I'm happy to see some people are actually paying for what they appericate :D

Re: 5

[personal profile] cyanglow 2008-04-02 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
That is good. :) As long as both "sides" are willing to treat each other respectfully instead of defensively (and without all the finger-pointing we've been seeing around here), there's always a chance some good will come of it.

Re: 5

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I think the situation is just getting really tense because it's becoming a pretty real chance (Still distant, but not like...completely out there) that some BIG companies are going to be collapsing soon because of it, and so on one side people are trying to protect what they love, and on the other no one ever wants it pointed out they're doing something wrong.

tl;dr ahead, sorry

[personal profile] cyanglow 2008-04-02 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Hm. Well here's hoping it can be worked out for the best, if dialogue is open.
I personally only keep up with 4 series right now: 2 American, 2 Japanese. On the American end, one series keeps getting cock-blocked due to network/company politics, but fans are more than willing to shell out extra if the banned episodes are available in the box set. (Downloading is one thing, but DVD quality is hard to beat if you really love something.) On the Japanese end, Viz owns 75% of what I keep up with (2 manga series, 1 of 2 anime of the same series). And Viz really needs some changes on the anime end, or yeah, they're gonna be in some trouble, I'm afraid. I buy the manga for both series, but am holding out for DVD box sets of complete storyline arcs, otherwise no, even as picky as I am, I'd rather eat than buy Bleach on DVD. :/

Re: tl;dr ahead, sorry

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I only really keep up with Naruto, and that's mainly cause I'm DIRT poor, and it's on TV, and for those times when i do have a chunk of money to blow, the box sets/manga are cheap. I can get it legally, without any fuss and muss. I'm looking into renting a few things cause I have a local anime rental store (Which I know is a luxury a lot don't have) I keep up with a few more manga, but since manga is like...$10 every few months, it's not a big deal.

What's so wrong with Viz? I've heard a lot of negative about them, and I know their old stuff sucks balls...but then again most everything from back then does. I only really keep up with Naruto which is pretty descent. What do they do wrong?

Re: tl;dr ahead, sorry

[personal profile] cyanglow 2008-04-02 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Right now my only issue with Viz media is price-per-episode individual DVDs, but that opinion could (and hopefully will) change when I see a Bleach box set. Haven't seen one yet, so I'm waiting. Right now $5.00-$6.00 per 24-minute episode is just too steep, and I do want to eventually purchase the first 64 episodes. On the other hand, I can see the point in selling the individual DVDs (for those who don't want the whole series), but the individual DVD price needs to come down a bit, IMO.

Of course I could argue on the downloaders' sake and say, why pay anything? And that's what companies need to keep in mind. Some people will always download and never buy. But some of them might buy, and some others would buy MORE, if they dropped the price tag a bit. :)

Re: tl;dr ahead, sorry

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah some people will always find a way to get it for free. Even if they got rid of Downloading, there's ALWAYS a way.

5-6 seems pretty step for a 30 minutes episode. My Invader Zim ones were $1.99, I could even see 3, but especially for something you can get free every saturday night on Cartoon network....
cyanglow: (smile)

Re: tl;dr ahead, sorry

[personal profile] cyanglow 2008-04-02 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. If people can see it for free on CN, it makes no business sense at all to charge so much per episode in DVD form. I hope they'll figure that out and make changes for everyone's sake.

Re: tl;dr ahead, sorry

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I really never saw the point of per episode DVD sales...ever. At least in Invader Zim or other if you have one episode like...theplot begins and ends in that episode.

What would you do with all of them D:

Re: tl;dr ahead, sorry

[personal profile] cyanglow 2008-04-02 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I meant in terms of division: i.e. one DVD with 4 episodes costs $20-$24. The only point I could see would be if you had just a few favorite episodes here and there that you would want to keep a long time, but the whole series was not important to you. (Like with Bleach, the Bounto arc I think sucked overall, and I won't buy it, but there are a few episodes I'd be willing to buy on separate DVD because they make me LOL.)

Ahahaa, yeah, I've run out of shelf space before, so I've had to part with some things. Thankfully my local store offers good money on used DVDS. ^^

Re: tl;dr ahead, sorry

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
SLIM DVD ARE THE MOST AMAZING THING ANIME COMPANIES EVER CAUGHT ON TO.

They might make it cheaper then, because like...the Naruto box sets are fairly affordable (And I'm a cheeeeeeap ass) and it's the same company and similar fan base. I'm guessing the only reason it hasn't is because you don't have the divide in bleach fans that you do in Naruto (The kids who will lap up anything they can put in the DVD player, and the big kids who want to see Konoha's face in tsunade's tits. IDK)
cyanglow: (giggle)

Re: tl;dr ahead, sorry

[personal profile] cyanglow 2008-04-02 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hee. ^^ But didn't the Naruto dub begin airing in the US like, a year before Bleach? So you're right; the sets will likely come out eventually. CN hasn't even finished airing the entire first Bleach arc yet. :D They're still on episode 50-something.

Re: tl;dr ahead, sorry

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, and the box sets are...realtively new (With in the last year I think) so I'm sure they'll come.

Re: tl;dr ahead, sorry

[personal profile] cyanglow 2008-04-02 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Here's hoping! I got my poor, bruised bank account expecting a hit. ^_^

And if the secret-maker is still reading (LOL), maybe this is a point to consider = TIME. Don't expect people to pay stupid prices NOW when they could get things more reasonably a year from now. Trust me, I've done that, and kicked myself for it repeatedly.

Re: tl;dr ahead, sorry

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but a lot of people just...don't. I'm with you, I don't have Naruto for that exctae reason (Some day...just not today. Tho I better hurry up withParakiss or they'll all be gone D:)

Re: tl;dr ahead, sorry

[personal profile] cyanglow 2008-04-02 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I still kick myself for buying all of Fruits Basket and Wolf's Rain one DVD at a time rather than waiting. I could have saved at least $75 overall. ); But eh, I had money back then...

Ok I am going to stop completely spamming your inbox and go to bed now! lol. I wish everyone I debated/conversed with on the internet was as nice as you. :D
