As long as it's available and free why wouldn't you take advantage of it? And that's not an excuse that's fact.
How much longer do you think it'll be available if people just download it and don't pay? They have to make money SOMEHOW. You seem to lack an understanding of the phrase "money makes the world go 'round".

You seem to not understand that merchendising makes more money than the companies themselves. The only ones being directly affected are the American companies that rely soley on DvD sales and make no effort to licence the Japanese merch that comes with it, which makes up... what? 60-80% of total sales?

I never said that I agreed with the bit about it affecting the industry overseas. And you're correct, they don't do merchandising. The fall of Newtype USA is a sign of how licensing fees are getting higher, and some companies can't afford to take the risk with figures or the like. My point is that we have to work with what we have; we don't have merchandising, so if you really love an anime, you'll support it by buying the DVDs. The industry certainly isn't going to flourish if people don't.

I just don't think the North American business is adapting to what makes the Japanese market work so well. Over there they have figures, towels, clothing, etc.

The ones over here that do take advantage of merchendising (OH GOD, POKEMON) do very well.

We shouldn't feel compelled to waste a billion dollars (obvious exaggeration) on something we'll only watch once or can't afford, where as toys and clothing and relative inexpensive in comparison and allow a better support of the fandom/business.

It's not the people not buying DvD's doing it wrong, it's the companies not meeting their markets' expectatitions.

I agree with [Bad username or site: hako neko @ livejournal.com]. The industry is just not adapting well enough to its fans. It's not that the fans dont want to spend money on their fandoms, it's that it's badly marketed, and people prefer merchandise in any case (you should see how the Naruto headbands sell here!).

DVDs has never been very profitable, so the smart thing to do would be to treat them mostly at promotional material, while making the real profit elsewhere.

(sorry about the bad html.)

No, I understand it perfectly; I just don't care. These companies make most of their cash from merchandising and after 10+ years of illegal downloading, anime is bigger than ever. Can you provide proof that anime production in Japan is suffering economically? I'd love to see annual reports, studies, anything you can provide.

See my above comment before you jump to conclusions.
