Oh, there's definitely a feeling of "you're on your own" (though the democrats would contest that) but it's not really in a negative way...if that makes sense. The origins of the country breed a general distrust of the government alone, but it's also the fact that we run on capitalism and the idea of the "American dream" and all that--that if you come here, we're going to give you an equal starting point but it's up to you to make what you will with it. Protestant Work Ethic and all that jazz, and some people do see it as a bit vicious but it's worked well enough that most people support it. The health care thing is an intersting issue though, lots of people split on that one here. :O

Yeah, that doesn't sound like there's room for much solidarity, you know.

I know what you mean about Protestant work ethic though; even though we're the least (or second least? I forget) religious country in the world (I think we're one of those post-religious countries), we were Protestant for almost five hundred years, and a very high percentage of the population is working (due also to an almost non-existance of housewives). But we also have a history of strong unions.

Yes, I know, but if you'll forgive me for saying this, it doesn't sem like a very equal opportunity situation from the outside. It's sort of, like the power belong only to those with money? And if you're not born in a family with anough money, you can't even choose which career you like, since you have to pay for university/college.

But I live in such a different country, and I've hardly got a balanced impression of the states, as I've not studied it that much. It's mostly what one hears on the international news, and on some programmes (and I'm trying to remember that most American families probably don't behave like they do in the sitcoms. XD)

Oh, I totally get what you mean--I feel like I never get an impression of a lot of countries beyond TV and I'm loathe to talk about them. XD

But anyway, I know it looks like that from the outside and many Americans agree, but...well, I come from an immgrant family and we've done pretty well for ourselves here. XD The rich-poor gap is overblown to some degree--it's definitely there, but the vertical mobility in the country is still very much around. Our immigrants from Asia, India, Africa and parts of the Middle East, for example,(I work in the English-for-speakers-of-other-languages classes in my school, so forgive the rambling) come in, oftentimes with few connections or cash and do very well, or random splinter groups like Cubans. And as a high school senior with a 50,000 dollar tuition facing her...our colleges deeefffinitely need to come down in price, but it's far from impossible to go, there're literally thousands of scholarships around, student loans, and community college programs that are drastically reduced in price. College is way too expensive right now, though, yeah, and people sometimes put it off so they'll be able to pay for it later. Thank god for in-state rates, I say, though I'm not taking advantage of them myself. >.>

I guess that's where the solidarity comes from...more of a thankfulness to the country than anything else. Though given our current immigration woes, that sure ain't a consensus. XD

I suppose that to me it seems like a country of extremes, in a way. I've grown up with a sort of "safety and decent life for everyone" philosophy, where cooperation in general has always been important.

Not that I think my country is perfect - far from it - but it's... comfortable. And convenient. A good base to work from, so to speak, heh.
