I hate that, too. Fuck no, Martin's work isn't "more adult". Yes, he loves writing about rape, torture, and gruesome murder, but that doesn't make it somehow more realistic. And also to me, that's like comparing Stephanie Meyer to J. K. Rowling. One writes something good and substantial, the other writes cheap garbage.

Tbh, a writer throwing in all the torture and rape in general comes across to me as a teenager experimenting with the cheap-and-dirty drama because if it was forbidden to children it ^must be the good stuff, right?

Not saying good writers can't do something good with those themes (and maybe Martin is one of them - I haven't read him). That's just my initial impression.

I think I've read a bit much fanfic.
