Gyms!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-07-13 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone have an easy to understand guide about how gyms work? Especially in regards to a group taking over a gym and training with a gym?

Re: Gyms!

(Anonymous) 2016-07-14 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I've been figuring it out as I go but:

-Gyms are associated with Teams (colors). If you battle a gym that is an opposite color, you can gradually weaken it and eventually take it over. If you battle a gym that is your own color, you can make it stronger.

-How stronger/weaker works: Gyms have levels. Level 1 is the lowest, that means they only get one Pokemon stationed there. The more levels the gym has, the more Pokemon get to be stationed there - so challengers might fight between 1 and 6 Pokemon. If you beat an enemy gym with 5 Pokemon, they go down a level, next time you challenge them they will only have 4 Pokemon, and so on. Once you beat that last 1 Pokemon battle, the Team is kicked out of the gym. You can "claim" it then (but you'll have to click it and deposit a Pokemon there to do so)

-If you train a gym, it takes a little longer. Basically, go to one of your own colors. You will get a little personal experience points for each Pokemon you defeat (you don't have to defeat them all). The gym also gets some experience points. Once they "level up", there will be an open slot for a new Pokemon. You can deposit one of your own, if you like. The Pokemon with the highest CP will be the "top"/last Pokemon at the gym.

-If you deposit a Pokemon, you can't use it until the Pokemon is defeated in the gym. With how many people are playing now, honestly, that's usually a matter of a couple hours or less.

-Pokemon don't heal automatically. You'll need to collect Potions to heal Pokemon after battling. They will not faint if you are training at your own Team's gym, but will have just 1hp after the battle. If you're fighting an enemy gym though, they will faint and you'll need a Revive.

Thank you! That is so useful (esp the second point).

My friend and I went pokehunting this afternoon and we ran into a friendly group of kids playing, a woman clearly on her break playing, and a guy in a tie and a bunch of folders playing. It was pretty great (it's a small town so there really weren't a ton of people running around; fortunately there's still plenty of pokestops).

Also, I FINALLY FOUND A GYM that was being run by my team and sent my Tauros in to help guard it or whatever. It worked for an hour or so and then my Tauros was returned with only 1 hp, which I can only guess means the gym was taken by another team (we didn't swing back that way). :(

I also caught a Growlithe and my entire day was made. Aaaaahh cute fluffy fire dog.

I got a Vulpix from an egg, which is awesome because Vulpix. But sucks because I'll never be able to get enough candy to evolve it.

!!!! Congrats on your Vulpix! It sucks that you won't be able to evolve it (Ninetails is so pretty!) but maybe there'll be another way to evolve it. It'd be cool if fire stones and such become available. :\a

OH, man, two of my eggs hatched today and I was so exciting! Until they hatched into a freaking Pidgey and a freaking Rattata! SO DISAPPOINTING. I didn't realize certain eggs were better than others! Now I have one that requires 10km of walking so hopefully I'll get something good out of it.

Ah man, and I was disappointed at hatching a Poliwag. (Er, new to Pokémon so I don't know how good this particular one is, I just hoped for something I hadn't seen before!)

I'm going to be so upset if I hatch a damn Rattata or Pidgey... (There are so fucking many. SO FUCKING MANY.)

Sorry. :( Hopefully you get something better next time!

(I assume the longer it takes to hatch an egg, the better the Pokémon? I've only found one 10km egg though, and like eight 5km.)

Poliwag is okay if not the strongest water Pokemon. It does have 2 stages of evolution which is a plus.

Yea! I actually evolved one, but I have yet to evolve one to its final form. (Pretty sure I've seen it though, and it was badass.)

I seem to see very few water type Pokémon... I feel like I'm missing out.

What Pokémon should I use Stardust on? (I'm going to assume the ones with the most CP?)

Is it best to train them at a gym before using Stardust, or after?

I also haven't found many gyms (at ALL) belonging to my team, so should I just not bother battling until I find one? Most the gyms around me have Pokémon that are FAR beyond my CP, and I know I can't overtake them on my own.

What team are you?

Re: Pokemon Go

Mystic! I very nearly chose Valor because the trainer silhouette looked like Isabelle Lightwood from Shadowhunters (who is hot as hell), but in the end I liked the description of Mystic better. (And, okay, the color and coat were cool too.)

Now I kind of regret it because I'm so alone...

You?

Re: Pokemon Go

Instinct! I almost chose Mystic but I'm not really big on the whole calm, intelligent thing, haha. Plus Zapdos is kind of an asshole and so am I. Mystic is supposedly the most popular team but I've seen mostly Valor so far, with Instinct being the most rare. Aw well. XD

Re: Pokemon Go

Yellow is good, too! I'm not calm or intelligent, but I would very much like to be, lol. Plus, I was so pumped to evolve Pokémon and that was mentioned in the description.

You aren't an asshole! (At least from my experience with you, but I'm sure I'm right!)

And I had heard Mystic was super popular, but I'm not seeing it locally. There's an overwhelming amount of Valor and some Instinct as well, with a Mystic here and there. I wish I was a higher level so I could help out more.

But gyms aren't the only reason to play, so that's okay!

The block just south of my apartment complex has a perfect setup of 4 Pokestops around the block.

It's beautiful.

Jealous! (There are five not TOO far from me, buttt two of them are in a graveyard, so that isn't helpful. Plus, I wouldn't want to camp out at any of them...)

Re: Pokemon Go

I'm a block away from our city's university, so it's a sorority and three smaller housing complexes. There's only sidewalk on 1 side of that block, though, so I have to look out for cars.

Also, the apartments across the street from one of the Pokestops put a lure tonight to play from their patio. So jealous they're in lazy range.

Re: Pokemon Go

Yea, this game could easily become dangerous if you aren't careful, but I guess the same could be said for most things. At least you don't have to travel halfway across the city?

Though I'm with you... Being able to play from your porch (Or work) is a dream come true. Damn.

I am continuing in my role of my mother's "handler"; she's the one actually playing the game but I'm the one who understands it (sort of), so I follow her around and hold the flashlight if we're out at night and give her advice. It's still adorable.

That IS adorable, and I wish to be in your shoes. Playing with a parent sounds rad.

(I'm curious to know what you caught, but this is actually my first Pokémon game so I'd have to Google the names anyway. I haven't ventured out at night.)

Has anyone had luck solving the "can't get player profile" errors and the screen freeze on catching? :s

Anyone else trying to play on an old, unsupported phone? I'm having mixed results. (iPhone 4s)

Upgrading my phone is an option but an expensive one and I have a hard time justifying it for one app. But I'm still jealous and really sad that I'm missing out on this. :(
