It's tricky in cases like this, I think, because there *are* very valid criticisms to be made of masculinity/the social and cultural structures connected to masculinity (I'm trying to condense a really complex network of things into a manageable idea, but I hope you get the picture). Like, should you shit on men *for being different*, of course not, but women as a group have some very fair criticisms to make of men as a group. The problem, as I think Coates shows really well through some personal experiences, is when it *is* just taking advantage of what's acceptable to be an asshole to someone who happens to be in the Acceptable Target group.
