Re: Dumbest mistakes about a piece of fiction you've ever seen

I once wrote a fic about a male character gently insisting his female work partner stay the night at his home because she was in no condition to drive. She doesn't want to because she doesn't want to put him out (it's clear in context that there's no ulterior motive to the invitation), refuses to take the bed when she finally agrees that it's safer for her to stay, keeps insisting in the morning that he's going above and beyond for her while he says it's nothing, and then buys him lunch. I showed it to a friend and she praised it because it confirmed her opinion that the female character was a selfish bitch. This is one of many reasons we're not friends anymore.

...how on earth did they get that interpretation?

She doesn't sound selfish, but she does sound paranoid, ungrateful, and unreasonably suspicious. Constantly refusing to accept someone's basic courtesy and hospitality sends the message "I know you don't really want to be this nice to me and will get annoyed if I dare to take up your offers, so I'm going to decline everything."
