I once read an article complaining about the type of Strong Female Character (tm) who is largely a sexpot designed for the male gaze but who gets to be violent and shoot people and that makes her strong. Serenity had just come out and, unfortunately the author of the article had decided (apparently based on the poster alone) that RIVER TAM was a good example of this trope. People were commenting "I agree with your main point... but golly River is totally not an exampe of this."
