I have the complete opposite experience. When everyone knows everyone, they judge and they never stop judging and you can never get away from it. It's oppressive and small and BORING and has a very real sense of utter hopelessness. Whereas in the city if you know someone who treats you like that, you just look elsewhere for people who treat you better.
