I'm just waiting for "imagine your OTP"s and "a story where..." type stuff to show up on AO3, and that will be the end of fanfiction forever.

Let me be in your fandom, because those have already shown up in most of mine on AO3.

"Five times" is already dominating AO3, so I'd say it's too late.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-14 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Where did those "Five Times" fics come from, anyway?

"Five times" fic-things have been around since livejournal days. They used to be actual memes (as opposed to what we see on bakerstreet now) that went around. I remember writing a few myself.

Smallville fandom, I think.

But usually "five times" fics at least have something resembling a story.
What gets my goat is those posts that are like "imagine a fic where" and they tell you the plot. WRITE THE DAMN STORY, I'M NOT GOING TO WRITE IT FOR YOU IN MY HEAD, HOW FUCKING LAZY ARE YOU.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-14 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Please. How fucking lazy are readers?

+1

I've seen a lot of this in my fandom since it moved to Twitter. It's basically shared headfic. Which is OK, I guess, for those who like it... but it's not really fic. It's just a premise that the 'creator' can't be arsed to do anything with.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-15 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
And yet, still preferable to "AU where..." and I'm like, that's not an AU, except in that it isn't the exact plot of the canon. That's just a prompt.

ugh, yes! The whole concept of AU has become really misused. A plot prompt is not an AU (necessarily).
Also I wish we'd bring back AT or some other use of "alternate timeline", which interests me far more than coffeeshops or high schools.

I have seen these, thankfully only one or two times but it was a little confusing.

Yeah, ugh. Why write an actual story when tumblr awards vague what-if outlines with hundreds of reblogs? /old grump

(Anonymous) 2016-07-15 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I thankfully haven't seen much of the "Imagine" stuff flooding my particular fandoms thus far on AO3 and FF.net.

But I HAVE been seeing a LOT of "Canon character/Reader" fic popping up on those sites :/.

If what the other comments say about that is right and it's little more than a summary... yeah, just write a bloody summary and stop trying to pass it as a real fic. I semi-frequently post summaries of ideas I have on my dA journal, but I remain absolutely clear that it's merely a summary of a plotbunny that cropped up.

what drives me crazy is the accolades. A concept post will get reblogged hundreds of times, but fics don't. The only thing this can possibly lead to is less people writing fic, because let me tell you, posting a plotbunny and moving on takes A LOT LESS EFFORT than writing thousands of words.

You know what I think the best use of plotbunnies is? Post a plotbunny and then open the floor for other writers to pick it up and try write an actual fic based on it.

The only thing I feel gets in the way of that is some people may not want to give up their ownership of an idea.

I admit, the stuff I have mostly posted on dA is stuff I more own myself, because it's usually stuff related to RP. I have however in the past posted plotbunnies for adoption by others, and have occasion ended up getting fic from it (quality varies).
