This confuses me a bit only because as awful as Trump is, he never struck me as religiously conservative? More the extreme end of fiscal conservatism.

Then again, Trump has said homophobic things, and I also think he'll do just about anything he thinks might up his chances.

I don't think he really cares about religious conservatism, I think he's hoping that Pence will make religious conservative voters not hate him.

He doesn't personally care. But he needs a marriage to the Religious Right to win. The Religious Right can mobilize both the cash and volunteers Trump needs for the general, and he can't afford to be RINOed by the group that controls both House and Senate currently.

Cruz may not be more scary than Pence, but the VP is pretty powerless as long as the President is alive. So Cruz would still be scarier as long as no one finds the last horcrux.

Trump is in his 70s and not exactly the picture of health, so it's not crazy to think it would matter.
