I agree that the two are different but I think OP was saying people were so against Nazi Cap because of their nostalgic view of Captain America just like everyone offended about female ghostbusters is hiding behind their nostalgia instead of calling it what it is.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-17 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I've read more than a few comments from people who are 'offended' by female ghostbusters who don't have a problem with there BEING female ghostbusters, but who would have preferred to see it with them as new characters/getting passed the torch, rather than a sex-swap.

And what's wrong with not liking a remake/reboot because of nostalgia? I still haven't seen the Evil Dead remake because I can't imagine anyone but Bruce Campbell as Ash, and people complain about the Star Trek reboot all the time.

I understand getting upset when people are commenting, "Ew, girl ghostbusters?" because that's straight up misogyny, but people are entitled to be attached to things from their childhood. (entitled is probably too strong of a word, but whatevs)

Edit: I rather liked the Evil Dead remake, (which had Bruce's blessing) in part because it really did it's own thing. It's a very different (but still very gory) animal, which I think a remake really needs to be good. If you do the same thing all over again, well, the fair question is, why fucking bother doing it at all?

As to Ghostbusters, I liked it (so much more actiony!) but I'd say it's biggest (fairest) complaint is that it's a little TOO much of a remake. Kinda the same complaint people had about star wars VII being a bit too much like Episode IV in terms of story narrative, but more pronounced in this case. When it does it's own thing, it's great! But it keeps coming back to the original a little too much. Like, (spoilers) the bad guy (who was the weakest part of the movie) wasn't Stay Puff, but at the same time he was totally Stay Puff! He was even sticky. I suspect this was producers, but they didn't let it stray far enough from the original and it hurt it.

The talent and characters are solid though and if this does make enough to have a sequel I think we could actually see something really good. That said, I could see where people would say "This is just a remake of that movie I liked, boo to it!", independent of the butthurt people upset that these ghostbusters' didn't have a penis.

Yeah I'll probably go see Ghostbusters because I don't personally have any SUPER attachment to the original (gonna see if my brother wants to go, because surprisingly even though he IS super attached to the original, he's been mega excited about the movie since the rumours of it came out).

So I should give Evil Dead a chance is what you're saying? XD

I would! The protagonist isn't just girl ash or anything (though she gets some badassery), they really owned that this was going to be something different. I can't remember if I've streamed it or not, would you come if I did? :P Cause I've streamed good movies with lousier excuses...

But yeah, Ghostbusters is worth a look, I'm giving it like, a B-? It's definitely better then Ghostbusters 2, I'll say that with confidence.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-17 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as it's not next Saturday, probably! I'm going to a baseball game next Saturday and won't be home in time for stream.

Haha, poor Ghostbusters 2. I don't even remember the plot, that's how much it stayed with me. XD

Allright, it's not like I ever have any trouble finding some horror movies to slap together, two weeks from now keep an eye out cause evil dead should be in a stream lineup!

(Anonymous) 2016-07-17 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Woo~! (If you want a ridiculous horror movie, I just watched Zombie Resurrection yesterday and it was fantastically ridiculous!)

There's this movie called Bed of the Dead I was eyeballing so I only needed a third... You really want to watch a movie you just saw again though?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-17 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I've watched the same movie every night for a week before. XD Watching it again in two weeks is no big deal.

I'm just here to second the love for the Evil Dead remake. The director and Jane Levy have another movie coming out in August. It looks really good.

Somehow, I'm more okay with an obvious remake than a "sequel" which is actually a remake that I didn't want.
I'm actually thinking I may really like this, because I was not a fan of the original Ghostbusters. So maybe this will actually be perfect for me XD

The marketing made it seem like a sequel at first. I think the marketing has been kinda bad for this movie, which I'm sure is hurting it now, not the movie's fault at all, but there it is. That first trailer was BAD.

The first trailer was absolutely terrible. I initially thought the idea itself was pretty cool, but then I saw that trailer and was like uhhhh D:
It's really a shame they didn't do a better job of it. The little character clips they released later were way cuter.

I do think that making it a sequel might have been better, though.

Honestly, it could have been accomplished with minimal rewrites. There's some other stuff the movie needs to work on, but that might have been a way to go.

I've not seen it yet, but I've seen a lot of people commenting that they don't understand why the first trailer was so bad, given that it's a solidly funny movie - maybe not a great one, but one that's a lot of fun and worth seeing.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-18 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
See, I feel like with all the accusations of the movie being "an attack on my childhood/nostalgia" if they HADN'T included nods and throwbacks to the original, it would have been seen as ignoring it or something (though I mean it's easy to say in hindsight that the movie would have been fine on its own). Like with a lot of remakes, it gets put into this situation where it loses either way.

That being said, all of the references got great laughs and cheers in the theater I was in, so idk how much harm they actually did.

The references were fine, but they needed to deviate the story more. The climax didn't change enough.

But...it's not a sex swap.

[personal profile] otakugal15 2016-07-18 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It KIND OF is. They do share similar characteristics to the original characters, but my husband puts it that they made them polar opposites.

The "Venkman" character, Erin, is still the one who is kind of a horn dog and the defacto leader (though i wouldn't consider her to be one per-se, but she is the one who is like "oooh pretty." they both tend to be the ones who get slimed more), Abby makes me think of a slightly more level headed Ray (they both get possessed, they are the more enthusiastic ones about proving ghosts are real), Holtzmann is Egon (both socially awkward and the builders of their equipment), but where as Egon was super reserved, Holtzmann is more social, and Patty is still the street smart one of the group, but no less smart, just like Winston. But, Winston was also more reserved.

So basically, the original team was like, 3 reserved guys and one excitable guy, while this team is like, 3 excitable women and one that is a bit more reserved.

Neither team treats each others characteristics as bad and I like that they did that.

SPOILERS FOR GHOSTBUSTER IN COMMENTS

[personal profile] otakugal15 2016-07-18 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)

Man, I have no issues with this because I LOVE the idea that this is actually an AU.

We get 6 cameos of the original actors in this film and they ALL do something that is related to death in some way.

Ramis gets a bust at one of the schools (didn't catch the name on the placard, so it COULD be Egon, but i dunno), Murray is a crotchety old Ghost Debunker (maybe something happened back in the 80s, Egon get's killed, and now he "debunks" ghosts to try and keep people away from the Supernatural to try and keep them safe?), Aykroyd plays a cabby who is kinda-sorta spooked, yet rather level-headed when the shit starts hitting the fan and he KNOWS about Class 5 Vapors (never saw or heard his name mentioned, so it COULD be Ray. or he could have just read their book, dunno), Patty's uncle is played by Hudson, who is a FUNERAL HOME CURATOR (and possible mortician. we also never got HIS name or the name of his Funerary services so it COULD be Zeddemore Funeral Home/Zeddemore Funerary Service/etc), and then Holtzmann's mentor is played by Weaver (i think her name was different, though that may have just been her last name mentioned. her first name could be Dana, but being as she never gets with Venkman, she could have married someone else, like the person she was with in the 2nd film maybe?).

Then we have Annie Potts who is basically playing Janine, just at a hotel as opposed to the GB headquarters. I never caught the name on her name tag, but it would have been AWESOME if it was her character's last name or even Spengler (i shipped them more :C) or Tully.

Sorry, I actually really liked the film and I LOVE the idea of it maybe being an AU~!!!

I did have issues with the film, don't get me wrong (kevin, though i get what they were doing with him, was just...TOO over the top), but I did like it a lot and I HOPE it gets a sequel.
