I really like the idea of telepathic bonding, for more or less that reason, but I've found that as a fanfic genre, telepathic (and soul) bonding fics seem to have a higher than average chance of getting really creepy really fast.

Though, okay, it might just be that I got burned really badly by a couple of fics. There was one Trek fic that fucked me up bad, and one in Transformers too. Some of the things people seem to think are romantic when it comes to telepathy/soul bonds are really, really not, and for some reason the idea of someone being in my head and inescapable that way fucks me up worse than some other, more real-world horrors.

I still like the idea, the sheer intimacy of that kind of closeness with someone, but I tend to tread very, very carefully with this kind of fic these days.

Same. I love the idea behind it, but it does have such a huge potential to go so wrong.

I just wonder about the Transformers one, because I remember a big multi-chapter fic where Prowl got sick of Jazz and got involved with Smokescreen and they suited each other far better, but because he was bonded to Jazz he basically got pulled away from the person that was best for him.

You know what gets me though? It's always part of a romance. I wish more writers would use it as part of a platonic friendship instead, or leave the telepathic bond until after the get-together part of the romance is already played through.
