Finding Carter and The Fosters

Neither of which are particularly popular around here, at least as far as I'm aware. But the Fosters popped up on my Netflix list, and then I followed one of the actors over to Finding Carter. They're not flawless shows and they get a lot of really simple things wrong, but I'm enjoying them immensely, and family drama isn't usually my kind of show. I'm actually sad that there's not a thriving fandom around to discuss season 1.

What's The Fosters like? A few people I've seen seem to really love it.

It's pretty good as far as ABC family shows go. The characters can be a little frustrating, but they're fairly realistic. It gets a few things wrong about the foster care system, but it's mostly an enjoyable show that I'm interested in seeing more of. I watched season 1 a few years ago, but I've forgotten most of it, so now I'm working my way back through it.

NAYRT - I hope you don't take this question as an insult, but does it get less... preachy? I DON'T mean because the mothers are gay or anything, so we're clear. If anything, I love love love the diversity. But it felt a bit Full House-ish (... PG-13 Full Houseish) in that everything seemed to have a moral message. I don't remember specifically what, it just grated. I do remember giving up in the episode when they found illegal drugs in someone's locker, and the one character (who was a principal at a charter school) said in a really serious voice "do you know what this means? Drug search."

But so many people seem to love it that I'm not sure I wasn't just judging a show by a potentially weaker first few episodes. OTOH, it may just not be for me.

No it's definitely pretty preachy. ABC family shows, in general, seem to be pretty preachy. That doesn't really go away. I think 'PG-13 Full House' is a pretty apt description.

AYRT - Ah. Well, then it's probably just not my type of show. (Which is weird because as a kid I loved Full House, but I also like edgier things than when I was a kid.)

Yeah, probably not. I didn't see Full House as a kid, and now that I'm an adult trying to watch it is just so dull.
