There's also just not that much to like about him other than the ~cool~ and ~gruff~ factors. He doesn't really do anything redeeming. A lot of his story arcs are just about various flavours of manpain...

Not a lot of nuance to be had.

I also find he works much better a supporting character than a lead, he just doesn't have enough to him to really carry things on his own. At least imo anyway.

No, you're 100% correct. He wasn't ever meant to be the focus, imo. Then a bunch of people latched onto him because... idk cool factor? and then everyone had to compensate by trying to shove more of a backstory onto him.

Unfortunately that doesn't make his core character more complex, so you're right. It doesn't work.
