She lost her mother and had to be the parent for Dawn. She had to be strong. She had to hide things. She had to have walls in that moment just to survive mentally. And Riley expected her to lean on him and share everything with him and show all her emotions. He wasn't willing to be what she actually needed in that moment, he was more interested in his idea of being needed and manly and protective.

Oh, yes, you are right. But her mother was sick. She was dealing with that. So I think the point still stands that he expected her to be someone she wasn't because of his own need to feel like the man.

Yes, this! Buffy definitely did put up walls and contribute heavily to the decline of her and Riley's relationship, but that doesn't mean Riley didn't have clearly defined character flaws due to his obsessive need to be needed.
