The reason I saw was that the show was very expensive to shoot at CBS's budget level (in the millions per episode), so it was going to be cancelled. CW's effects aren't as good, but they have a system for it and a more affordable budget, plus they already have other DC shows, so they adopted it when CBS decided they couldn't keep it up.
