Gendered how? Like the Romance languages?

Aw that's lame. I find that structure really off-putting too. I mean I'm sure it's fine when you've grown up with it but to me it just seems so random and dopey.

Lol yes I am using my dude!computer and my lady!radio. That's very important.

Plus, you know, studies confirming that yes this shit does make gender stereotypes more pronounced and yes, people actually do start associating gendered objects with the masculine or feminine qualities based on their grammatical gender... and societies where the object has a different gender associate them with the opposite.

But I've had native French speakers all but assault me with their baguettes for suggesting that this shit is nonsense (even though I freely admit that English is full of nonsense, too) so yeah I'll just twiddle my thumbs on this one.

nayrt

I think it's interesting to compare the way objects are gendered in different languages.

So Language A thinks your shoes female, but Language B thinks your shoes are male? Why is that? What is it about Language A speakers that makes them perceive shoes as feminine? What is it about Language B speakers that makes them perceive shoes as masculine? What's the etymology behind it all?!

I think it's interesting in a way, too, if only because it unwittingly reveals how bullshit-tacular gendering objects is. Especially if speakers on both sides are convinced that it is "obvious" how "inherently" masculine/feminine said objects are.

Yana, like wholly contradictory gender stereotypes between different cultures. No but for real though it's all just hard-wired genetics.
