Job/Career thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
How're you all doing? What are your aspirations? Making any progress?

I'm thinking about trying my hand at applying as a Foreign Service Officer. It's a crazy application process - computer test, essays, day long oral exam... and that all sounds awful, but I think if I made it, it could be a perfect job for me. I really want a job that lets me travel, but I don't want to do business and I don't want another stint as an English teacher. I want a career, and I think being an FSO could be amazing. Of course, this is after like a grand total of two days of looking into it... :P

I think I'm about twelve, because I just giggled at 'day long oral exam'. But good luck anon! You go chase your dreams even if it's a new dream! :D

I'm glad I'm not the only mental twelve-year-old.

Most careers worth having are hard to apply for. You don't see astronauts just walking into NASA with a resume and a winning smile; you have to outcompete, or at least convince someone you're a better candidate.

Just remember that while you're deciding if you want to go for it.

Making progress. Lots of progress. Terrifying, terrifying progress.

Making solid progress.

Just got about two more years in the highest stress part of the job until I can get into some really interesting areas.

Still looking for a job. It is really tough. If I don't find something in the next couple weeks, I'm going to have to take a temporary thing at Rackspace, ugh. But my parents are going back overseas and I'll have nowhere to live.

My job (working in an appointment center) is going okay.

My career (writing) has been kinda stalled by chronic pain and brain fog and meds, but hopefully the new pain doc will be able to help with that.

After wondering if I was broken for awhile, I have now banged out a pretty solid outline for a story I want to write for an anthology I desperately want to get into. That's more than half the battle, right there.

...now, if only I can do that with the novel outline, which is intimidating at hell, because I am not a natural novel writer and my normal outline process is wholly inadequate for a novel-length work.

But at least now I know I actually can do an outline. It's been in question for several months.

I don't dread waking up every morning and going to work anymore. That was an aspiration a year ago. Still gainfully employed, this time not by crazy abusive bosses so it's a big plus.
