Really? I've been in fandom quite a while now, and I don't remember anyone getting C&D orders from anyone but Anne Rice.

You know, neither do I - but there was still this distinct knowledge that writing and posting fanfic could land you in legal trouble, at least in the circles I was in. Today, it'd be absurd for someone to sue fanfic authors, but it wasn't back then.

It must have happened often enough that people feel the need to put a disclaimer on their stuff. I don't blame them. Piss off the wrong person and the wolves will descend on you. Better safe than sorry.
