Re: Sex sells?

Several years ago, I visited the Jane Austen Center in Bath. There was a dude there in his 20s, in period dress, who probably had other duties but was also clearly there to be attractive to the mostly-women who love dudes in period dress. Bait for Darcy!fen, like. He was friendly and very courteous and gave my friends and I space when we just wanted to check out the gift shop. I didn’t have any issue with the guy himself. It was the single most innocuous situation that has ever made me uncomfortable.

When I came to think about it more, I realized that it was probably the first time I’d encountered sex-appeal marketing targeted toward my demographic in real life, with a real person. Book cover models and actors were at enough of a distance not to be weird; I could passively appreciate the eye-candy while focusing on the story. But with a real person, it became so much more blatant. We think you’ll think this guy is hot and/or charming, so maybe you’ll spend more money! It was probably no more shitty a gig for that dude than any other job where you interact with the public. For all I know, maybe he really liked the Regency period and interacting with romantically-minded young ladies. But it felt like we were being encouraged to, dare I say, objectify him. It was a very weird experience.

I don’t know if I have a point to this story. Maybe I’m a just Nice Girl who can’t handle an unexpected encounter with a swoon-worthy cravat. But I wanted to share with somebody, so here you go, F!S.

Oh man. Ohhh man. You must never ever go to clubs or bars or ...basically anywhere in the hospitality industry if this is the literal first time you've ever seen the male version of sweater meat, OP.

Never been to a mall? Abercrombie and Fitch used to always have hot guy models in their store and out front. I think they've stopped doing this, but not sure.

This isn't really a response, but you might enjoy (if you haven't seen it already) this Toast essay on the Jane Austen Center: http://the-toast.net/2016/01/07/the-real-mr-darcy-a-literary-pilgrimage/

Are you kidding? I would have objectified the hell out of him and enjoyed every last minute of it!

I'm actually kind of disappointed that wasn't a thing when I went...

Though I love Jane Austen to bits and it was a fucking amazing tour regardless.
