When I was 22, just out of college, my mom had a BBQ at her house and one of her coworkers brought her 14 year old daughter, and made it a point that we spend time together. At the end after everyone left, my mom asked me on behalf of her coworker about the 14yo, because her mom was so concerned that she didn't really have any friends and she was just into fantasy novels and kind of socially stilted. She'd spent the entire evening showing me her fan art and talking about dragons from her fandom.

My summation was that she was fine-- she was a nerd, and probably in college she'd be able to find a D&D group to hang with in person, and also that being nerdy about something is fine, it's a short hop from drawing dragons to general artistic skills, and a short hop from writing fic within the structure of an existing franchise to general writing skills (even if she's not a novelist, being able to put together an engaging piece of writing is a skill in a lot of jobs).
