Well, I mean, thinking that someone who genuinely believes they're actually an otter or an elf or Frodo Baggins or whatever might be mentally ill isn't exactly unreasonable. A lot of the 'kin stuff is just ridiculous children being ridiculous children, but there are definitely people who have serious delusions mixed in with the pack, and ridiculing them is counterproductive.
