"faithful" is not the same as "good"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yes, but in this case it was both. And the effects were even fairly good for a tv budget.

The soundtrack was solid, too. The Children of Dune miniseries had an even better one.

I love both of the soundtracks!! They really are quite good.

And Children of Dune did stretch a bit but I can't imagine the subject matter being really good for 9 year old actors and am glad they aged them up a little bit.

MTE. Bad casting, Mediocre acting, uninspired script.

Maybe they don't know it exists?

Why do people keep assuming everyone is "pretending" something? All I ever hear around here is "stop pretending."

It's way, way easier to argue against something if you can just act like everyone knows it's really true and other people are just lying.

I think what they actually mean is people know it's there but won't acknowledge it when they talk about the canon. Not that they claim it literally isn't there.

I think if someone complains about there not being a faithful adaption of something they love, one can assume they at least checked wikipedia before? Adaptions of book series are usually something you can't ignore if you're part of fandom and it's usually fandom that's complaining.

I never heard of the miniseries but since it doesn't have Kyle MacLachlan in it, it is invalid.

and the costumes were amazing...

it wasn't completely faithful, I had a headache recently so I pulled Dune to read when I could and they gave Irulan a much bigger part in the mini-series and made Paul smarter than he was in the books.

It's still a good mini-series. I actually had a teacher who worked with the guy who did it or actually on the painted backdrops. Don't be too excited. He wasn't that great of a teacher.

I remember liking this mini-series too, I didn't get everything 100% I don't think but I understood a fuck ton more of it than the movie.

+1

Why not both?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-21 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
They should remake the mini-series with the Lynchian aesthetics. I love the look and feel of his movie, especially over the far too clean mini-series.

Still, topless Chani in the M/S director's cut... ^_^

I know about it but I've always heard it was about as good as the film. Maybe I'll watch it some time.

I've seen the sequel, and then only because my brother found it on DVD and then gave me the set. I wouldn't call it perfect, but it's watchable in my book, so I wouldn't mind seeing the Dune miniseries, just to see what it's like and how it differs to the book (I bought a copy of the book because of the CoD series).

Well, it tried to be faithful, and I liked it well enough. But I still love the Lynch version more - for nostalgic reasons, but mostly because of Kyle McLachlan. *g*

I really enjoy them both but for different reasons. The film, for instance, captured the epic scope of the book, and I felt some of the parts were better cast. The miniseries was a more faithful adaptation but lacked some of that scope and majesty of the filmed version and obviously didn't have the budget to really do justice to the book in terms of production design. They did a great job with what they had but...it was what they had. I find it to be a pretty mixed bag between the adaptations as to which cast members I prefer.

It's also kind fo low key annoying that the pronunciations differ between adaptations. Like, I know they were unaffiliated and there's no reason for consistency but some of them are inconsistent even within the same adaptation. And again that is probably more realistic but man, I just like consistency.
